The big debate: should businesses offer wellbeing days?

Do Mental health days lead to a more resilient workforce?

The debate around mental health days is more important than ever, especially since we spend a third of our lives at work. Companies must support employee well-being with days off and comprehensive mental health initiatives.

A Deloitte report shows a £5 return for every £1 invested in mental health, highlighting clear benefits. For example, my daughter works for an American beauty company that offers unlimited annual leave and progressive well-being policies. Jeffrey Pfeffer's "Dying for a Paycheck" illustrates how poorly trained managers and indifferent organisations can harm employee health. On the other hand, companies that care and train their managers effectively retain talent and attract new recruits.

Shamira Graham rightly points out that mental health days alone don't address workplace factors like burnout. As a Mental Health First Aid England Instructor, I deliver training to help organisations spot mental health issues and promote self-care. It's time to go beyond offering days off.
